Movement
Therapy
We will always work at your pace, both physically and emotionally. Our sessions are confidential, without judgement, and in line with the Australian Counselling Association code of ethics.
What is Movement
Therapy?
Movement therapy is like a standard counselling session, except it takes place outdoors instead of in the counselling room. The usual counselling and psychotherapy techniques are applied, and the same guidelines, ethics &
confidentiality apply. The aim is to get our mind and body moving for some, if not all, of the session.
How Does it Work?
Scientific research confirms the existence of our mind and body connection and how each influences the other. By connecting our mind and body through movement, along with counselling and psychotherapy, you can more effectively move through your problems. Moving and being outside makes us feel good, and these feelings can encourage talking which helps with the therapeutic process.
It may just be a short easy walk with some time spent sitting and talking. You may want a more challenging and longer walk. When we are walking and talking outdoors, we are connecting the mind and body helping you to make progress.
Whilst the aim would be to have most sessions outside, usually, the first session will take place in my counselling rooms. This provides time to discuss what is happening for you, the upcoming sessions and how best to structure them, and to check that we are happy to work together. We may decide that sometimes we will have a therapy session inside. It’s OK to switch between the two.
Who is it For?
Counselling and psychotherapy have been proven to help people, and so has movement therapy.
Sessions will be tailored to suit your level of fitness. All you need to do is give it a go and if you find that it's not for you, we can head back inside.
What if it Rains?
We will agree on your preference if it is raining at the time of your session. We can either move the session inside, or to a different day, or we can face up to the elements and put our raincoats on.
What if I See Someone I Know?
If this is something that would worry you, we will discuss what you would like to do if this happens. I can be your personal trainer, a friend or a colleague. It’s up to you. We can agree on an outdoor location where you feel the likelihood of this is minimised.
